Sickle Cell Anaemia is a genetic disease that can be passed down through families. If both parents of a child have the Sickle Cell Anaemia gene, there is a 25% chance that the child will develop or be born with the condition. The parents may be carriers of Sickle Cell Disease, but might not suffer from symptoms themselves. Screening is available in the UK to check for a presence of Sickle Cell Anaemia in pregnant women.
