Asthma Life Insurance

You may have found it difficult to secure life insurance with asthma life insurance. But rest assured, The Insurance Surgery has over 25 years of experience finding suitable policies for our clients.

What Is Asthma Life Insurance?

People suffering from Asthma looking for life insurance should have no issues in getting covered for the majority of cases, especially where the Asthma is mild and diagnosed many years ago. Asthma life insurance is generally viewed by underwriters as lower risk due to the type of condition that it is and therefore terms offered will generally be either standard rates or a small loading applied. Life insurance for people with Asthma will depend on a number of factors, such as:

Asthma life insurance can be subject to additional underwriting where there is use of oral steroids or for smokers (especially heavy smokers). There may also be additional medical information required for Asthma life insurance if you have been admitted to hospital as an in-patient or out-patient within the past 5 years. More severe cases where there has been multiple attacks in the past several years and symptoms are more acute then Asthma life insurance may be offered with an increase to your premium or even declined in very serious cases.

For the majority of people who suffer from Asthma, symptoms are generally mild and well controlled which means that we are generally able to offer standard premiums for Asthma life insurance with no special terms. If you have suffered from Asthma for a number of years and have previously had life insurance accepted on special terms then it is always worth reviewing your cover to see whether your premium can be reduced due to better control or improvements in underwriting.

There are several key areas that are taken into consideration when underwriters look at the risk for Life Insurance for Asthma:

Age of Diagnosis

Treatment (i.e. Inhalers, Steroids, Medication etc.)

Date of the last attack

Any hospitalisation

Time off work

The Insurance Surgery is a leading independent life insurance expert for pre-existing conditions such as Asthma and our team of expert advisors will search the insurance market to find the best deal for you.

Asthma Critical Illness Cover

Due to the fact that Asthma is generally a mild to moderate chronic medical condition then Asthma critical illness cover will generally be offered at standard rates with no exclusions. Life insurance underwriters will often require more information about your Asthma such as any time off work, any hospitalisation or any use of steroids to be able to identify the severity of your condition. In cases where there are no issues or complications then Asthma critical illness cover will almost always be offered with no exclusions and no premium loadings.

Asthma Income Protection

Due to the nature of income protection and the fact that underwriting is more strict than life insurance and critical illness cover, you may that it’s more difficult to get covered for Asthma income protection. Generally we still find that the majority of applications for Asthma income protection are still accepted with no increase to premiums due to the number of people we see that have mild symptoms or are well controlled. In more severe cases where there are more frequent symptoms / attacks (e.g. daily), recent hospitalisation or time of work then special terms will usually be applied.

Facts about Asthma

Asthma is categorised as a chronic condition (constant) which causes an inflammation of the lungs and airways that result in coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness or wheezing. Asthma statistics

5.4 million people are diagnosed / being treated for Asthma (1 in 11 children / 1 in 12 adults)

1216 people died from Asthma in 2014

NHS spends £1 billion every year on treatment and carers for Asthma

Every classroom has 3 children with Asthma on average

Asthma attacks result in a hospital admission every 8 minutes

Most people with Asthma can and do lead perfectly normal lives with no restrictions to daily activities and therefore life insurance premiums can reflect that with normal rates.

Treatment for Asthma

Asthma is most commonly treated by using an inhaler which is also known as a pump and this equipment will insert a type of medication directly into your airways. There are lots of different types of inhalers and the most common types of inhalers are:

Preventer inhalers – To stop Asthma symptoms from occurring in the first place

Reliever inhalers – These are bronchodilators that relax the muscles and widen the airways helping you to breath

Causes of Asthma

Asthma is caused by inflammation of the Bronchi which are small tubes that carry air to and from the lungs. These tubes (Bronchi) are more sensitive for Asthma sufferers and can easily be irritated when they come into contact with certain elements (known as triggers). This will cause the airways to become narrow and the muscles around them to tighten which increases the production of sticky mucus (phlegm).
Most Common Triggers:

Cigarette smoke

Pet hair / fur

Exercise / loss of breath

Viral infection

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Asthma affect Life Insurance?

For most people with Asthma, where Asthma is under control with medication and inhalers, life insurance would normally be available at normal rates. If the Asthma is more complicated and there is a history of severe attacks or hospital admissions, then the cost of the life insurance may be increased. By using The Insurance Surgery we will find you the most competitive cover.

Critical Illness Insurance will usually be available to people with Mild Asthma and should be available at normal rates. If the Asthma is more severe, then the cost of the Critical Illness Insurance may be increased and even declined in the most severe cases.

It may be possible to obtain Income Protection Insurance at ordinary rates if you only have mild Asthma. For more severe cases the cost of the insurance may be increased or even declined.

As a general rule of thumb, Private Medical Insurance cover will usually not be offered for pre-existing, ongoing medical conditions. This means that you will probably be able to obtain insurance but the cover for your Asthma and any related conditions will be excluded.

When applying for Travel Insurance it is vital that you declare your Asthma as a pre-existing medical condition. You should then make sure that the Asthma is fully covered in case you suffer from an attack on holiday. Usually, providing the Asthma is under control, the Travel Insurance will be accepted at normal rates.
