Life Insurance guides 2023 – 2024

Life Insurance can feel complicated and overwhelming but it doesn’t have to be. Discover our 2023/2024 in-depth guides to life insurance, which give you all the answers to the questions you didn’t know you had.

Life insurance policy buying guides

When it comes to insurance policies, life insurance is surprisingly straight-forward to understand. Simply put, you pay in a premium every month, and when you pass away, your loved ones will receive a financial pay out.

But life insurance has developed an unfair reputation for being difficult to understand, and hard to arrange.

We want to change that.

We’re on a mission to help you protect your loved ones even after you’re gone.

As independent life insurance brokers, we work with insurers across the UK, helping people like you secure suitable policies. Whether you’re just starting a family, have a pre-existing health condition, work in a high-risk job or simply want peace of mind that your funeral bills will be taken care of, we are here to help.

If you have any questions about what life insurance is or how it works, we want you to pick up the phone and give us a call. You could even ask us a question through our live chat. We promise, no question is ever too big or small – we’ll take as much time as you need to understand how life insurance can protect your family.

Our life insurance guides are a good place to start

If you’re starting your life insurance journey, you might not be quite ready to get in touch yet.

We get it.

You want to do your research first before picking up the phone.

That’s absolutely fine – some people prefer to talk to us directly, others prefer to read information at their own pace.

We’re exactly the same.

That’s why we’ve created a selection of life insurance guides, so you have all the information you need in one handy place. We’re breaking down the barriers to life insurance and making it as easy as possible for you to figure out what you’re looking for, and how it could help your family.

Our life insurance guidance is designed to give you a good idea of what policies are available, and how they work. You can read them in your own time, and if you have questions, feel free to get in touch. We can give you a life insurance quote over the phone, or we can talk to you in more detail.

We promise, you’ll never feel pressured to take out a policy.

But when you are ready, we’ll be here waiting to take your call.

Why do I need life insurance?

What are the types of life insurance?

How much life insurance cover do I need?

We’re award winning insurance experts located in the heart of cheshire, England. If you wish to speak to someone on the phone call us today on 0800 083 2829 or contact us via email by clicking here.

Can you take out more than one life insurance policy?

Yes you can. You may decide that you want more than one policy to cover different parts of your life – perhaps a mortgage life insurance to pay off your home, but a separate policy to ensure an inheritance for your kids. There are no limits to how many life insurance policies you have – as long as you’re keeping up with the premiums, you will be covered.

But paying out for multiple policies could mean that you’re overpaying and overinsuring yourself. Why not review your life insurance policy each year to check you have the right cover for you? Plans can be easily adjusted to change with your life, allowing you to simplify your finances while still maximising your protection.

Do you need life insurance if you have death-in-service benefits?

If you’re working for a large employer such as the NHS, you may be eligible for death-in-service benefits. These provide your family with a payout if you were to pass away while an active employee. Death in service benefits are highly useful but they aren’t a substitute for life insurance. You’ll only be eligible for a payout if you are still currently working for the company. It might also limit the potential payout based on how much you had contributed towards your company pension scheme.

In contrast, you will be in complete control over your life insurance payout as it offers a greater level of flexibility. Not only can you decide the length of your policy term, but it will be there for reassurance long after you’ve reached retirement age.

What happens if you die after your term life insurance ends?

Term life insurance policies are often cheaper because they are for a specific time period. Typically, people choose to take out 30- or 40-year term policies, which allow them security that their mortgage would be paid off, or their children will be taken care of.

When a term policy reaches the end of its term, the plan simply expires. You will only receive a payout if you pass away during the policy term. If you die after the insurance has ended, you will not receive any payout unless you’ve taken out a new life insurance policy.

Will life insurance pay out for suicide?

If you’re struggling with your mental health, please phone the Samaritans on 116 123 or Text SHOUT to 85258.

We don’t ever want you to feel that help is not available. Thankfully, many insurers are now offering value-added services such as counselling support as part of their overall packages, allowing you easier access than ever to fast, instant support.

But while no one likes to talk about suicide, it is a valid question, and one that we are often asked.

Most life insurance policies will pay out for claims resulting from suicide, but there will be a suicidal death clause in place. This typically means that your policy will need to be active for at least one or two years, before the insurance will pay out for a death by suicide. The exclusionary period will vary according to different insurers.

The purpose of this clause is so that policyholders do not feel that there is a financial motivation to take their own life.

If you have experienced poor mental health, it’s important that you are honest with your insurer. Failing to declare a previous mental health issue could result in your claim being denied, which we know is the last thing that you want.

Can you get life insurance if you’ve experienced poor mental health?

The good news is yes you can. Life insurance is widely available for people with a history of poor mental health.

The even better news is that many providers are now offering exclusive access to virtual GPs and counselling services as part of their overall package – so you can benefit from easy access to support.

Insurance companies know that everyone goes through ups and downs in their lives, and that mental health is a journey that lasts a lifetime. They know that health in the mind is just as important as health in the body.

Please don’t ever feel that your mental health makes it impossible for you to get a good life insurance plan.

Here at The Insurance Surgery, we work with insurers across the UK, many of whom specialise in life insurance for mental health. You might have a history of anxiety or depression or come from a family with a history of mental illness. Maybe you recently had a bad mental health episode or were told you have something more serious.

No matter what is happening, our expert team is here to support you, making it easier for you to say what you want in a mental health life plan.

If you’re the primary breadwinner or share financial responsibilities, a life insurance policy can help your family maintain their standard of living in the unfortunate event that you’re no longer around to support them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a person with HIV get life insurance?

Yes, absolutely. Due to the recent changes in life insurance underwriting for HIV, we have seen a number of previous restrictions lifted. We now have access to standard rates and ‘whole of life‘ cover with no term restrictions if you are living with HIV, your viral load is undetectable, and your CD4 count is high.

Similar to other pre-existing medical conditions, if you are HIV positive, you will likely pay higher premiums than someone who isn’t. The exact amount depends on your personal circumstances, which will be assessed when you put forward your application.

If you’ve recently been diagnosed with HIV but already have life insurance, it is well worth reviewing your existing cover, especially if it was obtained several years ago, as it is very likely that some changes could benefit you.

The Insurance Surgery also offers a free Annual Review service to all our existing / new clients. This means that we constantly make sure that you have the right cover for your ever-changing life and check for any changes in underwriting.

Yes, we do! Use our partner’s Travel Insurance comparison tool to compare over 20 travel insurance quotes, all with your HIV covered, within just a few minutes and only having to input your information once.

Offering free advice, our experts are ready and waiting to offer protection advice on HIV life insurance policies that would best benefit your circumstances. With 25 years of experience, we’re a trusted broker and pride ourselves on making insurance simple.

We understand that finding life insurance can be tricky, especially when you have a pre-existing condition, so why not leave it to us? Give us a call today, and we’ll help you find the ideal policy that suits your needs and matches your budget.
